Traveling alone is very different from traveling with a group. If you’re alone, you have no one to rely on and nothing to borrow if you forget something. Obviously, group travel benefits everyone in the group. However, that doesn’t mean traveling alone is boring and less fun.

Careful planning is essential for solo backpackers. One of the common reasons why a trip usually turns into a disaster is neglect to pack a few travel essentials. At times, excitement may overwhelm us which often results in forgetting to bring these items with us.

  • Universal Plug-in Adapter

Be aware that electrical sockets vary from place to place. In most countries in Europe they use round two or three pin compatible plug sockets. Meanwhile, flat pin sockets are widely used in North America and Asia. Just imagine if your gadget is low-bat and you don’t have an adapter. What would you do? Therefore, it is important to carry a universal adapter for all your gadgets. With a global adapter, you can still use portable devices with foreign sockets.

  • Map

If you are very familiar with the streets and landmarks at your destination, carrying a map may not be that important. But if it’s your first time visiting somewhere, you should always have a map with you. Yes, you can ask for directions. However, you must remember that some areas do not use English as a first language. In short, a language barrier may arise.

Interactive maps are highly recommended as they can give you accurate information like street names, business establishments, MRT/bus stations etc. There are apps that allow you to download maps of specific places to your smartphone. Paper maps can be used as a backup.

  • Compact First Aid Kit

Who needs a first aid kit when traveling? Well, we never know what might happen along the way. A compact first aid kit may include rolls of gauze, tape, alcohol wipes, band-aid, and basic headaches and colic remedies. This kit can be very useful for minor emergencies such as minor cuts. Being compact means it won’t occupy a large space in your backpack.

  • Resealable Plastic Bag

Leave a small space in your backpack for a few resealable bags. Why do you need to carry this plastic bag? If you’re going on a beach vacation, this bag can hold your wet clothes until you reach your hotel where you can dry them. Or you can use this bag to store your dirty clothes. For sanitary reasons, it is recommended not to mix your clean and dirty clothes. In other words, this resealable bag can keep things in your backpack secure.

This is just in addition to the many travel essentials you need to keep in mind when you are out on your own. Of course, you shouldn’t forget all the documents like flight confirmation, passport (overseas travel) and travel insurance info. Be sure to get a hotel confirmation as well. For example, if you have booked a room at Palms Casino Resort, you have to print the confirmation they send for immigration purposes. When you’re ready, traveling alone is just as much fun as traveling in a group.
