Being happy and smiling are some of life’s best pleasures and when we are happy or laughing we show our teeth and smile to the people around us. For many people, having crooked teeth makes everyday expressions awkward if they are self-conscious about the appearance of their teeth. For those with crooked teeth or uneven jaws Northern Virginia, Vienna, VA orthodontist Dr. Allen Garai can help solve the problem through the help of Vienna, VA

Invisalign maintenance among other treatment options. Orthodontists use a variety of devices to help improve the appearance of a smile that is problematic for one reason or another.

Some of the more common tools and equipment used by orthodontists include retainers, braces, bands, elastic bands, brackets, and Invisalign aligners. Braces have been relied on for years as a method of treating crooked teeth. They function by applying pressure to the teeth and jaw in such a way that it is moved slowly into the desired position until all the teeth are aligned. Thank goodness, Dr. Garai, a skilled orthodontist in Vienna, VA, won’t always have to rely on past pieces of all-metal braces. Instead, an Invisalign treatment can be given that is almost self-explanatory and works very well.

Standard braces have brackets that are glued directly to the surface of the teeth, or sometimes behind the teeth depending on the situation which can also help make them less visible. Braces can be made of plastic, ceramic material or stainless steel and some are made with tooth-colored enamel to help them bond better.

Invisible aligner trays, or Invisalign trays, are another option besides braces. These are specially fitted trays that are removable but when worn apply pressure to the teeth like standard braces to help align the teeth creating a straighter smile. While your orthodontist won’t recommend that you get Invisalign if you need a lot of orthodontic treatment, it’s a great option for those simply looking for a straighter, symmetrical smile without the need for braces.

Headgear is used when a little more force is needed to help push the teeth into position and help straighten the jaw. Fortunately these are generally only worn at night which may be a relief for many as headgear is generally quite elaborate and very obvious when worn.

Retainers are used to keep teeth in place after braces are removed. Your teeth are at risk of shifting and becoming crooked again even after orthodontic treatment so you want to be sure to work with your orthodontist to ensure that you wear retainers regularly or regular Invisalign trays to keep your teeth straight.

Before you get your orthodontic job done, you will meet with your dentist to assess your individual needs and find out which procedures and tools are right for you and what kind of results you can expect to achieve a more beautiful smile.
