Almost there.
In classic minimalist Apple fashion, the invites for Apple’s September 12 event are done in simple black and white and marked by an unobtrusive Apple logo. But the effect, also in true Apple fashion, has been explosive—at least for some who have been waiting anxiously for the release of Apple’s next-gen smartphone.
In a special event invitation, the tagline Almost there engraved above the set number 12 in Apple’s modern typography. You don’t need superpowers to see that under the 12 is a broad shadow of what appears to be the number 5, which is widely speculated to hint at the launch of the much-anticipated iPhone 5. CNET also revealed that this special event will be held at 10 a.m. at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater of San Francisco.
The iMore blog was the first to report a purported September 12 launch. It also circles September 21 as the expected US release date.
Amidst the confirmation that Apple’s big event will be held on the 12th, some netizens are debating the meaning of “5”. Some thought that other Apple gadgets might launch at the same September 12 event (five gadgets instead of one iPhone 5?), while others thought this was unlikely and chose to stick with the iPhone 5 story. There was also talk that a separate event would be held this month. future for the iPad Mini, a smaller version of the iPad.
Among the new features expected on the next iPhones are a bigger screen, a dual-tone case, and LTE connectivity. The leaked photos also show a smaller dock connector, meaning the new iPhones won’t be compatible with older Apple device accessories. The smaller dock connector is expected to be the default connector for future iOS devices, but iMore says that there’s no reason to ditch it. Apple will also provide an adapter.
Other blogs have highlighted the new business features of the next iPhone, such as Passbook, improved Siri and near field communication. No doubt Apple will come face to face competitors when it comes to business phones. Recently, Nokia announced its new Windows 8 flagship phone, the Nokia Lumia 920, while rival Samsung also stated that sales of the Samsung Galaxy S III have crossed the 20 million mark.
Apple fans and critics alike have provided their own views on Apple’s latest project. As usual, we can expect a constant barrage of bickering between Apple “haters” and fanboys. Some have argued and defended Apple’s choice to name the new iPhone iPhone 5. Technically, harsh critics say the new iPhone should be called iPhone 6. Others have responded that it’s Apple’s right to name their own products, which also makes sense, doesn’t it? ? Some have scoffed at the iPhone’s much-vaunted features, claiming that Apple’s latest gadget has nothing new to offer that competitors haven’t done better. Then there’s the silent faction of supporters and detractors who are content to wait around for whatever Apple is cooking up. Of course, we can’t ignore the group that doesn’t care what Apple does. Whatever anyone’s reaction, what’s undeniable is that we can expect a lot of attention on launch day.
