Mother’s day is just around the corner and many of you may be wondering what you can get for the mother in your life. Whether the mom you’re thinking about already has everything or you’re operating on a tight budget, knowing what to get for Mother’s Day causes enough stress to make the youngest mom’s hair turn gray. If you can’t think of anything you can buy in a store, get out the sewing machine and make something from the heart. Here are some fun Mother’s Day (or just summer) gift ideas:
Seamless fleece flower
These easy-to-make flowers can be attached to hairpins, worn as bracelets or even used as home decorations. The easiest way to make one is to find one of the many patterns available online. Once you’ve found the one you want, all you need to do is cut it out and follow some easy instructions specific to each design.
Fleece blanket
Here’s another craft idea that doesn’t require sewing. Find the patter you like and then cut it to the size of the blanket you want. If you want to turn your comforter into a regular blanket, that’s easy too. All you need to do is cut a piece of fabric that is identical to the first. Sew the two pieces of fabric together and then, using a needle and thread, attach the buttons or ribbon in a square pattern (about six inches to a foot apart) over the fabric.
Fleece Scarf or shawl
As with blankets, the most difficult part of creating this project is choosing the fabric you want. Once you have it, simply cut it to the size you want. For the scarf, you should leave about an inch and a half of fabric on both ends to cut into strips. Once these pieces are cut, tie them around and fiddle! the scarf has tassels.
Perhaps the best thing about working with fleece is that the fabric doesn’t fray or rip so you don’t have to worry about finishing the edges of the seams. Although this can still be done for decorative purposes if you prefer. Because of this, you don’t have to worry about leaving too much room for seam allowances, which can help cut down on bulk. This also means that you don’t have to worry about any edge seams unless you want them to be.
Sheepskin is a great fabric to work with and wear. The end result is something no mom (or anyone else) can enjoy. Perhaps the best part is that these projects are fun to create and use. It’s soft and cuddly, lightweight, and easy enough to work with and care for. I read that fleece was developed to be used as an alternative to wool. It should keep you woolly warm without itching, shrinking, and absorbing the wool.
