The iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 are both out in the market and are the top two contenders when it comes to smartphones. Sorry, BlackBerry users. When it comes time to buy a new cell phone, most people narrow it down to these two choices. As both are improved versions of the previous models they feature some new specs like increased speed or bigger screen but which phone is better? Here’s a comparison between the two, without going into too much detail.
Design
iphone 5
Apple has gone to great lengths to make the iPhone 5 as thin as possible, coming in at 7.6mm and with a non-removable battery. The phone has also been tweaked to feel better despite being thin. Its new aluminum back provides more traction than previous iPhones. However, there is a problem with the black version of the phone. Since the back is made of aluminum, scratches scratch easily and tend to show through, exposing the silver aluminum underneath. The white one had less problems with it but iPhone owners are still a bit annoyed.
Samsung Galaxy
Galaxy S3 comes with a thickness of 8.66 mm and still has a removable battery. It has an all-plastic finish which seems a bit unlike phones that cost a lot of money, but they say the plastic is tough. It boasts a large screen (4.8 inches) which makes it significantly larger than the iPhone 5. One way to gauge whether it is your preferred size is to access it. Some may find it too big for their hands.
Screen
iphone 5
All iPhone versions have used the same 3.5 inch screen size but with the latest, they have gone up to 4 inches. However, they made it in such a way that it doesn’t make the phone any wider than the rest.
Samsung Galaxy S3
The screen is a large 4.8 inches with a pixel density that rivals that of the iPhone 5. It has a Super AMOLED panel which provides more vibrant colors.
Operating system
iphone 5
Apple’s iOS has always been pretty fast but has less flexibility compared to Android and with iOS 6, it doesn’t disappoint. One of the most talked about aspects is the use of Apple’s own Maps application which has been the object of internet humor since its launch.
Samsung Galaxy S3
Galaxy S3 uses Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich as opposed to the latest version of Jelly Bean. This gives the user more control over how the phone looks, unlike iOS. It also uses Google Maps which works great as it displays up to date maps.
Strength
iphone 5
The iPhone 5 has 1GB of RAM and is known to be twice as fast as the iPhone 4S.
Samsung Galaxy S3
The S3 also has 1GB of RAM but uses a quadcore chip called the Exynos 4412.
Battery
iphone 5
The iPhone doesn’t do much with the battery and should last around 8 hours of talk time or 40 hours of video playback with 3G enabled around the clock. Like its predecessors, you can’t remove the battery to swap it for a powered one so once your battery runs out, so does your usage – until you find a charger.
Samsung Galaxy S3
Samsung did a good job with the Galaxy S3’s battery, beating its competitors by about 20%.
