Milk is something that most families consume in large quantities. However, when it comes to storing it, most of us quickly realize that fresh milk won’t last a few weeks at most. As a result, milk is often an item that is often removed from the family emergency food storage. But why should we let its short shelf life prevent us from stocking up on the American staple?
Something that’s not only delicious and versatile but also contains healthy vitamins and minerals like a generous amount of calcium?
Here are some alternatives to help you complement your food storage in the best possible way.
Frozen Milk
If you can’t stand the thought of having non-bovine moo juice in your food storage, you can actually extend their shelf life by freezing them. This will allow you to store them for up to three months, so you should rotate your supply every three months. You may also want to try freezing just one carton first to test it. The consistency may change slightly as it thaws, and it’s not to everyone’s taste. If you like it, you can then work on replenishing your stock.
Milk powder
Powder is probably the best milk for food storage. Not only is it as close to the real thing as you’ll get, especially in taste and texture, but it’s also inexpensive and easier to store while taking up less space. The shelf life of powdered leche is usually around 18 months, but if packaged properly, it will be much longer than that. It also doesn’t need to be refrigerated, which aids storage. Instant is also an option. Almost the same as powdered milk, but made through freeze drying process.
Soy milk
Whether you have an allergy to lactose or dairy, you want an easier storage option, or maybe you just like the taste, soy milk is a popular alternative. The good thing about soy milk is that you can make it yourself at home. This makes it a good last resort for emergencies. Nutritionally, it has nearly the same protein, less fat, and contains no cholesterol, when compared to regular milk. There are different flavors, so one more you’ll want to try first. Soybeans have a shelf life of about 18 months.
Milk rice
Rice milk is a little harder to come by than soy, but some people prefer the taste. This is another type that you can make yourself and is cholesterol and lactose free. It does contain more carbs than regular milk. Rice milk also has a thinner consistency than milk or soy. It has a shelf life of about nine months.
Almond milk
Thanks to its creamy consistency and added flavour, almond milk is a popular alternative. It’s also something you can make yourself, tastes great with drinks or fruit, and has an average shelf life of about a year.
