When the traffic police wanted to check speeding drivers without imposing any financial penalties on them, they had the wonderful idea to install speed bumps on the roads. Traffic police use traffic police as one of the traffic calming features.
This is an elevated area that crosses the entire width of the road and effectively helps slow traffic on that road. There are many types of speed bumps depending on the purpose of the speed bumps.
- Commercial
These are placed on streets and parking lots and are made of high-impact materials. The materials used to build the traffic calming feature are concrete and asphalt. Generally, they have colored stripes along their surface that are reflective so they have good visibility even in low light conditions.
- In a residential area
Areas that have problems, such as high-speed racing by young people and high-speed traffic problems, tend to have these types of traffic calming features. Even though these speed bumps are smaller in size and made of lower impact materials such as recycled plastic or recycled rubber, they are effective at slowing down traffic. These speed bumps can also be painted in yellow or orange.
- Various ways
This is a multiple low-level traffic calming feature and is also known as a rumble lane. These rumble lanes are a great way to slow down traffic at places close to roundabouts or bends.
Speed bumps are definitely a great way to control traffic speed in a city but they also pose some problems for vehicles that have low ground clearance. Since vehicles with low ground clearance bypass the traffic calming feature, the shock absorbers lower the car further and this can cause the body of the car to hit the bumper and be damaged. Two-wheeled vehicles are the worst in this case as they can lose control and get into an accident.
To avoid such situations multiple breaks in the speed-breaker continuity are provided. Two-wheeled vehicles can pass through this gap and avoid all kinds of accidents. Also many times there is a sign posted before the speed breaker so that drivers can be forewarned and accidents can be avoided.
There are certain guidelines to follow when building speed bumps:
- Speed breakers must cross the entire width of the road or it could be a section of the road that leaves a little space in the middle for two-wheeled vehicles to pass.
- There should be space left on both sides for rainwater drainage
- The height of the raised road mound should be between 3 and 4 inches
- The depth of the speed breaker must be less than a foot
- Speed breakers must have embedded reflective strips or must be colored orange or yellow for easy viewing.
In general, it is the duty of everyone using the road to be careful and careful while driving, but many people may not follow the rules and this is why the traffic police may need to employ certain methods which will force people to slow down and this avoids accidents for the most part.
Speed bumps are a great way to control traffic speed and to make people aware of their duties. Traffic police personnel may not be available in all locations but these vehicle speed control techniques help them carry out the job even in those locations easily and effectively.
