It makes sense to buy only the best quality wheels for your Merc and then spend a little time maintaining them and keeping them clean as well. It’s interesting to see that there are tons of DIY solutions out there.
Soap and water
Some automotive experts claim that the best and easiest way to keep your wheels clean is to wash them regularly with soap and water. This can be a useful thing to do if you AMG wheels have a coating on them that plays a protective role as well. However, be sure not to use harsh, chemical-rich soaps. Plus, don’t use harsh scrubs to remove the foam.
Here are some more tips:
- Use soft gloves, meant for your wheels only.
- A soap solution will be effective but be sure to remove all of the solution when washing your car.
- Keep a separate set of washcloths for this job otherwise you risk getting brake dust residue on other parts of your car.
Pressure wash
You can also invest in a hose pipe equipped with a pressure nozzle. This way you can adjust the pressure and direction of the water flow to remove dirt and oil from your wheels. In most cases, using a rag to get to those hard-to-reach places manually is sufficient to get the job done. You can also invest in a squirt bottle that can hold your cleaning solution and help spray it on the inside of your wheels as well.
Paintbrush
You can also invest in a set of wheel brushes to help you out. There are three, in general, parts of a wheel:
- The easy part is the front of the wheel that looks out.
- The hardest part is the wheel barrel which is the deepest area.
- The center is all the lug nut openings – hard to reach but not nearly as much as the wheel barrel.
To detail the surface of the wheel, choose a soft bristle and long-handled brush. You can also check the length of the fur – it should be very long. For the lug nuts, you can use the same brush or use a narrower brush. For wheel barrels, use a brush that has soft bristles but more importantly has a soft rubber or plastic coating on the stem and handle. This way, you won’t scratch any part of your wheels.
It’s a good idea to clean your wheels regularly as brake dust buildup can prove to be very damaging to wheels. While there’s no way to avoid brake dust buildup, you can certainly wash them thoroughly and keep your wheels looking like new.
