With summer in full swing, it’s an important time to maintain your hydration levels. Water is very important for our body and we cannot survive without it! Not only does it regulate our body temperature, it also removes harmful toxins from our body by excreting waste through urination and sweating. By drinking water regularly, you are helping your kidneys and liver to get rid of unwanted toxins. Did you know it also carries valuable nutrients throughout our body? 92% of our blood is water, and it carries oxygen and nutrients!
It’s reported that a staggering 60% of the population drinks LESS than one glass of water a day, and that’s barely enough! As an adult, you should be drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day, which means many of us are severely dehydrated and that’s a problem. Dehydration causes the brain to shrink and can be a trigger for migraines, lethargy, and fatigue. If you work in an office environment, staring at a computer screen most of the day, it is very important that you keep your fluid levels up for concentration and productivity.
If you find it difficult to maintain hydration levels, maybe you forget or don’t enjoy the taste of water, then these tips will help you on your way to a healthier and hydrated body!
- Turn on your water
The water doesn’t have to come straight from the tap and into the glass. Have fun with your drink, why not try adding your favorite fruits like strawberries and limes to your water for a kick? Or for a refreshing spa-like drink, add cucumber! There are lots of possibilities, and you can even buy a bottle on the go that will allow you to put fruit in your water!
- Bring a water bottle
It sounds simple but quite often we forget, so set an alert on your phone to remind you in the morning to fill up a bottle of water to go outside. I personally use a bobble bottle because it also filters the water removing any loose carbon.
- Download the app
There are enough apps for everything these days! So download one like Free Daily Water to keep track of how much water you drink, there’s also a reminder to let you know when you need to refill! Useful huh?
- Set your own goals
I find if I have something to work on, I produce better results. So start with a realistic goal, so if you’re drinking one glass of water a day right now, why not try increasing that to 4-5 and then work your way up to your recommended 8 glasses a day.
- Use water coolers
Now there’s nothing wrong with tap water, but if you prefer water that’s properly cooled, why not buy a water cooler? You can choose a bottled water cooler which means you buy water as and when you walk through it!
You can also supplement your diet with foods that have a high water content such as watermelon, oranges and celery as these will also increase your water intake. Remember, stay hydrated, stay happy and enjoy your summer!
